THREE SCOOBIES ON CARNEGIE/GREENAWAY SHORTLISTS

This year, books by three SCBWI stalwarts made it to the KidLit world's most coveted shortlists: the Carnegie - Greenaway Children's Book Awards handed out yearly by CILIP, the library and information association. The House With Chicken Legs by Sophie Anderson and Bone Talk by Candy Gourlay were shortlisted for the Carnegie. You're Safe With Me by Chitra Soundar, illustrated by Poonam Mistry was listed for the Greenaway.

THIRD ASTRID LINDGREN NOMINATION FOR ARTIST

Illustrator John Shelley has been listed for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for the third time. 237 candidates from 68 countries were on the list for 2020 presented by the jury at the Frankfurt Book Fair on 17 Oct 2019.

NATASCHA GARNERS MBE AND LAUNCHES THE CRAYON MAN 

British Isles regional advisor Natascha Biebow has done SCBWI proud with an MBE for her long service to the KidLit world. Her debut non fiction picture book The Crayon Man is winning honours too – from being selected a Junior Library Guild book to being named one of the 'Best Picture Book Biographies Done Exceedingly Well' for 2019 on the School Library Journal's Fuse #8 Production blog.

MATT KILLEEN WINS CRYSTAL KITE AWARD

Matt Killeen is shown accepting the Crystal Kite Award dressed as Hilda at SCBWI's fancy dress mass book launch, it culminated a much awarded year for Matt's bestselling debut Orphan Monster Spy, including being shortlisted for everything from the Amazing Book Awards to the Costa Book Award.

THE TIDE BY CLARE HELEN WELSH WINS NORTH SOMERSET PRIZE

The Tide by Clare Helen Welsh and illustrated by Ashling Lindsay has won the North Somerset Teacher's Book Award. "Mommy says Grandpa's memories are like the tide. Sometimes they're near and full of life. Other times they're distant and quiet."

FLYING TIPS FOR FLIGHTLESS BIRDS IN AWARDS STREAK

Flying Tips for Flightless Birds by Belfast SCBWI Kelly McCaughrain has won a handful of awards in Ireland: the Eilis Dillon Award, the Children's Choice Award, Children's Books Ireland Book of the Year and Northern Ireland Book Award. It has been shortlisted for the Great Reads Awards, Essex School Library Book Awards, and the Calderdale Children's Book of the Year.

A WIN FOR ELLA ON THE OUTSIDE

Ella on the Outside by Cath Howe has been no stranger to book award shortlists, recently winning the North Somerset Teacher's Book Award. It was included in 2019's Read for Empathy Collection by Empathy Lab.

SUE WALLMAN THRILLERS STILL DEAD POPULAR 

Lying About Last Summer, the first of Sue Wallman's thriller trilogy won many prizes including the Zoella Book Club. So did book two: Your Turn To Die. Book three, Dead Popular, is keeping up with its siblings, recently winning awards from Highgate Wood and Maidstone.  

WHITE RAVENS LIST PICKS TWO SCBWI AUTHORS

 The Munich based International Youth Library has named Bone Talk by Candy Gourlay and Night of the Party by Tracey Mathias as 'White Ravens' – a selection of books "that inspire and provoke, set new trends, and are of the highest quality in terms of language, content and artistry."

RAPUNZEL'S CURLS WIN POETRY PRIZE FOR LAURA

Laura Mucha has won the inaugural YorkMix Poems for Children Competition for her poem ‘Rapunzel’ [And sweet Rapunzel’s golden curls / would slowly tumble and unfurl / allowing Witch to clamber up / (occasionally getting stuck).] The poem will appear in Laura's poetry collection, out in 2020.

JOHN CONDON'S WONDROUS SHORTLISTS

The Wondrous Dinosaurium  by John Condon was shortlisted for SCBWI's wondrous Crystal Kite Award for UK and Ireland as well as The Children's Book Award.

JENNIFER GOLD MAKES KIRKUS BEST INDIE BOOKS FOR 2018

Only 100 books make the Kirkus Reviews Best Indies list and Top Leaf  by Jennifer Gold (illustrated by Jessica Gadra) is in it! Top Leaf has also won a coveted starred review from Kirkus.

PLANET STAN IS UP FOR A 2020 LOLLY

Planet Stan by Elaine Wickson was shortlisted for the Laugh Out Loud Book Awards (Lollies) 2020, nine to 13 category. Stan also attracted a shortlisting from the Coventry Inspiration Book Awards - Hooked on Books Category.

STAR AND JUNIOR LIBRARY GUILD SELECTION FOR SARAH COLEMAN

Out to Get You by Josh Allen and Sarah J Coleman was given a starred review by Kirkus and selected for the Junior Library Guild.

Shana Nieberg-Suschitzky's yet to be published Nero the Hero was shortlisted for the Stratford Literary Festival Children's Book Competition

LILY'S JUST FINE IS SHORTLISTED FOR THE PEOPLE'S BOOK AWARD

Lily's Just Fine by Gill Stewart, the first of her Galloway Girls series of young adult novels set in rural Scotland, has been shortlisted for the People's Book Prize.

ALISON DONALD'S TODDLER BOOK ON SHEFFIELD SHORTLIST

AdoraBULL, Alison Donald's picture book, was shortlisted for the Sheffield Book Award, toddler book category.

AMY GREENFIELD'S MIGHTY RA IS A JUNIOR LIBRARY GUILD SELECTION

Writing as A B Greenfield, Amy's Ra the Mighty: Cat Detective has been shortlisted for an Edgar Award for Juvenile Mystery. Its sequel, Ra the Mighty: the Great Tomb Robbery has been selected by the Junior Library Guild.

POETRY JOE WINS INDY BOOKSHOP WEEK PRIZE

Joe Coelho's picture book, If All the World Were... (Frances Lincoln) won the Independent Bookshop Week Award 2019 and was described as a "poignant, lyrical celebration of the love between a grandfather and a child" by The Bookseller.

The House With Chicken Legs by Sophie Anderson has spent 2019 appearing on some impressive national shortlists including the CILIP Carnegie, the British Book Awards, the Waterstones Children's Book Award, the Blue Peter and the Branford Boase. Way to go!

CANDY GOURLAY MAKES NO BONES ABOUT HER BUSY YEAR

From being appointed Booktrust Writer in Residence to major shortlistings to being selected for the Cheltenham Festival Reading Teachers=Reading Pupils Programme, Candy Gourlay has had a big 2019.

A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR VASHTI'S BRIGHTSTORM

Brightstorm by debut Vashti Hardy was shortlisted for the Waterstone's Children's Book Award. Brightstorm was shortlisted for many prizes and won the Weald Book Award.
